A Checkered Past is a compelling short film narrated by Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, who tell the poignant story of the original 42 “Chimpanzees in Need,” who were left behind at the Wildlife Waystation. The once-thriving waystation closed unexpectedly in 2019, leaving hundreds of animals in need of new homes. All were rehomed, except for the chimpanzees, who have unique needs that only a handful of sanctuaries can accommodate.
Since this film was made, most of the individuals have been relocated to sanctuaries at great financial cost, but some still remain at the Wildlife Waystation. There are currently 18 chimpanzees stuck at a closed refuge urgently in need of new homes at accredited chimpanzee sanctuaries. We need your help to get them there!
